Below is a list of my favorite television productions that are either crime or espionage dramas:
FAVORITE PERIOD CRIME AND SPY DRAMAS
1. "Agatha Christie's Poirot" (1989-2013) - David Suchet starred as Agatha Chrsitie's most famous sleuth, Hercule Poirot, in this long-running series that adapted her Poirot novels and short stories.
2. "The Alienist" (2018-2020) - Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning starred in this adaptation of Caleb Carr's novels about an alienist (psychiatrist) who helps the New York Police Department track down serial killers in late 19th century New York City.
3. "Agatha Christie's Marple" (2004-2013) - Both Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie portrayed Miss Jane Marple in this adaptation of Agatha Christie's novels about the elderly sleuth.
4. "Copper" (2012-2013) - Tom Fontana and Will Rokos created this BBC America series about an Irish immigrant policeman/war veteran who patrols and resides in New York City's Five Points neighborhood during the last year of the U.S. Civil War. Tom Weston-Jones, Kyle Schmid and Ato Essandoh starred.
5. "Boardwalk Empire" (2010-2014) - Terence Winter created this award winning crime drama about Atlantic City, New Jersey during the Prohibition era. Inspired by Nelson Johnson's 2002 book, "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City", the series starred Steve Buscemi.
6. "Agatha Christie's Miss Marple" (1984-1992) - Joan Hickson starred in this adaptation of Agatha Christie murder mysteries featuring the elderly sleuth, Miss Jane Marple. The series was produced by George Gallaccio.
7. "Peaky Blinders" (2013-present) - Steven Knight created this television drama about a Birmingham crime family in post-World War I England. Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory and Paul Anderson starred.
8. "Agent Carter" (2015-2016) - Hayley Atwell starred as Margaret "Peggy" Carter, an agent with the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) in the post-World War II Manhattan. Created by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the MCU series co-starred James D'Arcy and Enver Gjokaj.
9. "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries" (2012-2015) - Essie Davis starred in this television adaptation of Kerry Greenwood's historical mystery novels about a glamorous socialite who solves mysteries in 1920s Melbourne. The series was created by Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger.
10. "Pennyworth" (2019-present) - Jack Bannon starred in this early life exploration into the life of Batman's famous butler and assistant, Alfred Pennyworth in 1960s Britain.
